I have a recognised post-graduate qualification in clinical psychology. Clinical ExperienceI have worked in adult mental health in the NHS from 1979 (South Manchester DHA, Salford DHA)until 1989, and from 1991 until present (South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust; Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust). I have considerable experience in all aspects of mental health, in the assessment and treatment of anxiety, emotional, depressive disorders, psychological trauma and PTSD, personality disorders, psychotic disorders and schizophrenia. I was head of the NHS Clinical Psychology Service in SMUHT from 1991-2000. I have considerable experience in assessing and treating with mental health problems associated with burn injury (Burns unit, SMUHT). My NHS clinical practice is within Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust and is located at Laureate House, Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. I currently manage adult psychology out patient and psychological trauma clinics at Wythenshawe Hospital. I have worked in private practice in Australia (1989-1991) and England (1991 –present). My private practice is located at Calderbank Medical Chambers, 87 Palatine Road, West Didsbury, Manchester, M20 3JQ. I am an accredited cognitive behaviour therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP). I am the past Chair of BABCP. I am honorary Fellow of BABCP (awarded 1988). I have specific expertise, and I am an internationally acknowledged expert in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS). Medico-legal ExperienceI have been preparing psychological reports on clients since 1989. I have considerable experience in reporting on psychological injury and in assessing mental health in adults. I have prepared psychological reports on instruction from both Claimants and Defendants. I have prepared reports on adult assessments in child care proceedings. I have some experience in criminal cases. I have received training from Bond Solon on acting as an expert witness, court room skills and report writing and from the Andrew Sims Centre for professional development in courtroom skills. I am listed in the Law Society's Directory of Expert Witnesses. I have court room experience, most recently in the High Court of South Africa. Professional ExperienceI am a member and Fellow (awarded 1989) of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and member of the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology. I have been an invited member of committees advising government bodies (Medical Research Council, Home Office; Foresight Programme, OST; NHS R&D; National Institute of Clinical Excellence appeals board), commercial advisory panels (AstraZeneca; Pfizer) and professional body (British Psychological Society, Investigatory Committee). Academic experienceSince 1991 I have been Professor of Clinical Psychology and Head of the Division of Clinical Psychology at the University of Manchester. I have overall responsibility for the professional training of clinical psychologists on the Doctor of Clinical Psychology course at the University of Manchester. I have written or edited 7 books, written over 30 book chapters and published over 200 papers in peer reviewed medical and academic journals, including papers on clinical treatment, psychosis, traumatic stress and CBT. I have lectured or taught widely in the UK and in abroad, including: Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, Uganda, US, Hong Kong. I am the editor or associate editor or a member of the editorial board of a number of clinical psychology and CBT clinical and scientific journals. |
